Although he includes a perfunctory love scene where a bloody-fingered Lancelot bends metal bars to hook up with an imprisoned Guinevere while Kay, gravely wounded by his usual combination of bravado and poor planning, sleeps unwittingly in the same room, there isn’t much of a payoff to their relationship.
They are usually available very cheaply — I suggest getting all four in one file, if you are interested, and can’t afford the modern translations. Arthur is a typical cuckold, weak, ineffectual, and pathetic—perhaps even comic. His poetry is marked by a learning and a taste for dialectic acquired in Latin schools; but at the same time it reveals a warm human sympathy which breathes life into characters and situations.
Cline’s introduction–containing a description of Arthur in history and literature, a discussion of courtly love, and an account of the continuations of the story of Lancelot and Guinevere–makes Lancelot an ideal classroom text. I unapologetically love Arthurian romance and it was great to read the “origin” story of Lancelot. Il s’y rend et blesse gravement son adversaire qui prend la fuite. There’s a problem loading this menu right now. This book is, more or less, where Lancelot enters literary history and becomes an important part of the Arthurian legend. I should preface this by saying that I really love Arthurian legends. Of course the very “knightly” things Lancelot does can see a little weird- like agreeing to return to his prisoner after the tournamen I should preface this by saying that I really love Arthurian legends.
Definitely know this text well enough, though this is a new edition and translation to me — the one I read before rhymed, and it was quite nice to read one that didn’t because it felt Oh, woe is me that none of these editions are properly set up on Goodreads but I don’t have the authority to edit them This is not as boring a read as one may think compared to other medieval texts.

This edition is pretty great; it’s a modern translation of a chrefien of French that non-trained modern readers wouldn’t understand, and since it’s a high school edition, it also comes with notes and explanatory texts at the end.
I like better bittersweet or tragic endings rather than cheerful ones, and the predictability of the last fight bothered me a little. Lancelot is still chreetien pathetic and everybody needs to get a grip and learn to fact-check instead of believing every rumour they hear to the point of wanting to die because of bad news.

Arthur is just a king in the background. If you know nothing about King Arthur, I’d still recommend this book because I found it to be a great story of adventure and romance; plus, I found it really funny.
